Why I prefer- RPGs

Hey guys, Andrew here. In today's article i want to talk about why I prefer to play RPGs over any other type of video game.
The first and single biggest reason I prefer RPGs would have to be.....story. I myself love a good story and, lets face it, you're not getting a very compelling story out of a FPS. Now, I know there are exceptions to this rule (such as Half-life) but it just isn't enough. Being a fictional writer myself, I love seeing how other people "roll out" their stories as compared to mine. My personal favorite story line is probably that of the Kingdom Hearts series. Primarily because its just awesome. I've played every game in the series and the story has never once gotten dull for me, even in Kingdom Hearts: Re:coded which was literally THE SAME STORY AS THE FIRST GAME, I felt interested. I wanted to know what happened next even though I already did!

But to move on, before this sounds more like a review for Kingdom Hearts, the next major reason RPGs stick out for me is... the music. If you ask anybody who knows me what I like to do, one of the things they will say is listen to music. Now before I talk about music, I want to explain my personal taste of music. Most people who know me will say my favorite music is hardcore scream-o; this is not true. My actual favorite music is orchestral style music. In that realm I prefer the Tokyo Philharmonic. After orchestral, I would choose in this order: J-Rock/pop/rap, then Scream-o, then rap. Now for music in video games. The first thing I notice in a video game isn't its graphics, isn't its play-style. The first thing I do is listen to the title music. My ABSOLUTE favorite title theme is "Dearly Beloved." I have spent literally hours listening to just this song and I find the games with the best music are the games I most enjoy therefore RPGs generally have the best music then they are the most enjoyable for me.

Finally, my last reason I prefer RPGs is the "bang for your buck," or in other words getting your money's worth. Generally when i buy a game I'm looking for a game that will last me a good large amount of time. When I buy a FPS, I don't get a very large amount of time of gameplay (the exception being MW2 which I have spent something like 14 days on). Case in point, CoD:BO. This game was TERRIBLE for playtime. The story took me about 4-6 hours to complete. On top of that, it wasn't even that good of a story. Once I got to multi-player I got more hours out of it, but still, I played B.O. over a span of about 2-3 months. I will most likely never play it again just because there isn't anything left for me to do. To give my most extreme example of a game worth my money... Pokemon Blue. Blue version was and is one of my favorites. I got the game awhile after it came out not thinking I would enjoy it very much. I. Was. Wrong. To date I have spent 200+ HOURS playing that game and not once did it feel boring or fruitless to play (I will talk more about it in the first episode of the podcast so for now, enough said).

So to conclude, I love RPGs. I know people disagree with me (William) but that is okay. They have their opinions and i have mine. So now it's your turn let us know what your favorite genre is and why in the comments below!
